# Defining and Designing Sustainable Landscapes

Sustainable landscapes integrate ecology, society, and economy to create harmonious environments that support biodiversity and human well-being.

![Defining and Designing Sustainable Landscapes](https://energytheory.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/Defining-and-Designing-Sustainable-Landscapes-1-1024x683.jpg "Defining and Designing Sustainable Landscapes")

Sustainable landscapes are responsible for the positive development of the environment and healthy communities by helping in environmental benefits such as promoting water conservation, preventing resource depletion, sequestering carbon, cleaning the air, and creating significant value through social and economic benefits. Therefore, defining and designing sustainable landscapes is important.

### **What is the Concept of Sustainable Landscape?**

A sustainable landscape is an outdoor arrangement for human recreation, satisfaction, and enjoyment. The sustainable landscape uses minimal building materials, labor, pesticides, fertilizers, and water. It is basically maintaining a balance between resources that are used for maintenance and construction to gain a profitable result.

### **What are the Features of a Sustainable Landscape?**

Features of the sustainable landscape are:

* Creating habitat for birds, pollinators, and wildlife to create a bridge between the home garden and wildlife.
* Reducing the carbon footprint from the atmosphere by capturing and returning it to the soil.
* Conserving water.
* Check and control soil erosion
* Using natural composting to increase the fertility of the soil.

### **How Can We Make a Sustainable Landscape?**

Ways by which we can make a sustainable landscape are:

* Using solar lights
* Planting native plants
* Conserving water
* Growing vegetables to reduce footprints
* Using natural materials for landscaping
* Natural shade
* Composting garden and kitchen waste for fertilizers

### **Why do We Need a Sustainable Landscape?**

We need a sustainable landscape due to the following reasons:

* Reduces pollution
* Protect wildlife
* Conserve energy
* Decreases chances of drought and floods
* Reduced waste
* Promote recycling and reuse features
* Reduce stormwater run-off

### **What are the Benefits of a Sustainable Landscape?**

The benefits of a sustainable landscape are:

* Conservation of resources and energy
* Long-lasting
* Low maintenance
* Less use of pesticides and fertilizers
* Minimal use of water
* Recycling [green waste](https://www.netsolwater.com/what-is-green-waste-and-different-types-of-waste.php?blog=125)

A sustainable landscape is a developing area as it is sustainable and green. Defining and designing sustainable landscapes raises challenging questions about the plan and nature of the land. It also challenges to build, design and manage them with the natural resources present with the benefits of promoting a clean and green atmosphere. Any landscape whether office buildings, city parks, shopping malls, educational institutions, commercial or federal buildings can be converted into sustainable landscapes as it is important for human health and the ecosystem.
