# Arizona Incentives for Electric Cars

Arizona has EV infrastructure and charging incentive programs from both state and private organisations.

In the sun-soaked state of Arizona, beyond the benefits of driving an electric car, did you realize that additional savings can be unlocked through incentives specifically designed for EV charging? Let us find out more about Arizona incentives and rebates along with registration costs.

## **Arizona Incentives for Electric Cars**

While the costs of electric vehicles (EVs) have been reduced, numerous consumers still encounter challenges when it comes to purchasing EVs and gaining access to the necessary charging infrastructure. Arizona has both infrastructure and charging incentive programs from state and private firms. The residents may not discover state-sponsored Arizona incentives for electric cars, but utility companies in Arizona provide incentives for individuals installing home EV chargers or residential solar systems.

### **Arizona State Incentives**

![EV incentive: EV rebate Arizona](https://energytheory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/EV-incentive.webp)

The state of Arizona offers these incentives for electric cars to encourage green transportation:

#### **1. Alternative Fuel Vehicle (AFV) Parking Incentive**

Drivers of dedicated [Alternative Fuel Vehicles (AFVs)](https://energytheory.com/what-are-alternative-fuel-vehicle/) have the privilege of **parking without facing penalties** in designated carpool operator parking areas, as long as the vehicle is powered by alternative fuels. These recognized alternative fuels include Propane, Natural gas, Electricity, and Hydrogen.

#### **2. High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Lane Exemption**

HOV is a restricted traffic lane that is exclusively designated for vehicles with a driver and a minimum of one passenger, including carpool vehicles, vanpools, and transit buses. Arizona provides an incentive for electric vehicle owners by **allowing eligible EVs to use HOV lanes** without meeting the standard occupancy requirements. To benefit from the HOV lane exemption, eligible electric vehicle owners may need to get the EV registered and licensed by the state.

#### **3. Alternative Fuel and Alternative Fuel Vehicle (AFV) Use Tax Exemption**

Electric cars when converted from diesel will get a complete exemption of use tax. Under [Arizona state legislation](https://www.azleg.gov/viewdocument/?docName=https://www.azleg.gov/ars/42/05159.htm), alternative fuel vehicles qualify for a complete** 100% use tax exemption** if the vehicle was originally manufactured as a diesel vehicle and subsequently converted to operate on alternative fuel. The recognized alternative fuels are propane, natural gas, electricity, hydrogen, and blends of hydrogen with propane or natural gas.

#### **4. Zero Emission Vehicle Emissions Test Exemption**

Arizona provides an emissions test exemption for [Zero Emission Vehicles](https://energytheory.com/what-are-zero-emission-vehicles-zevs/) and does not mandate annual emissions testing for registered electric vehicles. However, alternative fuel vehicles, except electric and hydrogen vehicles, commuting into the cities of Phoenix or Tucson, must undergo emissions testing as part of the registration process.

### **Arizona Private Incentives**

The private utility providers offer various electric car incentives and rebates to encourage EVs and Alternate Fuel Vehicles.

| **Utility** | **Rebate Type** | **Amount** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Tuscon Electric Power | Residential Level 2 or DCFC Station Rebate | Up to $500 |
| Arizona Public Service | Level 2 EV Charging Station Rebate | $250 |
| APS Smart Charge Program | $25 bill credit + $5 annual credit |
| MEH | Residential Level 2 or DCFC Station Rebate | $1,000 |
| Commercial Level 2 or DCFC Station Rebate | $2,750 |
| Salt River Project | Level 2 EV Charging Station Rebate | $250 |
| SRP EV Community Membership Credit | $50 |

Now, let’s discuss the incentives offered by these private utilities in detail.

#### **1. Tucson Electric Power**

There are two rebates provided:

**A. Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Station Rebate for Residential Customers:** Tuscon Electric Power ([TEP](https://www.tep.com/smart-ev-charging-program/)) has the opportunity to receive a rebate of up to **$500** when purchasing a Level 2 or Direct Current Fast Charging (DCFC) station. The rebate amounts differ based on the amperage of the EV charging station.

**B. Commercial Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Station Rebate:** It provides rebates and technical assistance to businesses, multifamily dwellings, and non-profit customers who acquire and install 2 to 6 EV charging station ports. For locations installing 6 or more ports, TEP will assess the electrical capacity and support EV charging infrastructure on a case-by-case basis and commercial customers situated in underserved communities can access higher rebate amounts.

| **Types of EV Rebate Arizona** | **EV Charging Station** | **Location** | **Rebate** **(Approx.)** |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Commercial EV | Level 2 | Workplaces, Offices | $4,000 per port |
| Level 2 | Non-Profit Organization | $5,400 per port |
| DCFC(Direct Current Fast Charger) | All places | $20,500 per port |
| Non-commercial EV | Level 2 or DCFC | Residential | $500 |

#### **2. Salt River Project**

**Residential Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Station Rebate – SRP**

Salt River Project (SRP) extends a** $250** rebate to residential customers upon purchasing an eligible Level 2 EV charging station. Additionally, customers joining the SRP EV Community can receive a $50 bill credit. Further details, including eligibility criteria, can be found on the [SRP EV Benefits and Savings website.](https://www.srpnet.com/energy-savings-rebates/home/ev-benefits-savings)

#### **3. Arizona Public Services(APS)**

According to the [APS](https://www.aps.com/en/About/Our-Company/Newsroom/Articles/This-National-Drive-Electric-Week-APS-customers-can-plug-in-and-save-money) electric vehicle incentive program, Electric Vehicle Charging Station Rebate provides residential customers with a **$250** rebate upon purchasing an eligible Level 2 EV charging station. Customers participating in the APS Smart Charge Program have the opportunity to earn a $25 bill credit and an extra $5 annual credit.

#### **4. Mohave Electric Cooperative**

[MEH](https://www.mohaveelectric.com/energy-solutions/rebates/mohave-charged-rebates/) is offering rebates to customers who purchase networked Level 2 or Direct Current Fast Charging (DCFC) stations. Residential customers can receive a rebate of **$1,000,** while commercial customers are eligible for a higher rebate of $2,750.

Registration of a new EV costs around **$15** which includes charges/fees for a title, registration documents, air inspection, and license plates.

For EVs registration, migrated from other states which is more than 5 years old – the **emission test costs around 12$** and you need to apply for a new Insurance Arizona ID regardless of which state you come from.

For the registration process in the DMV office, you will need all essential documents and ID proofs. To know more about renewal and other registration-related services, check out [AZ MVD Services Online.](https://azmvdnow.gov/home)

To sum it up, these initiatives of the state of Arizona stimulate economic growth and EV infrastructure. Moreover, the state offers HOV lane exemptions, tax rebates, and parking benefits to encourage alternative fuel vehicles. For more EV-related content, keep exploring our website.
