# What are Bi-Fuel Vehicles?

Bi-fuel vehicles have two different fuel systems, one of which has been designed for natural gas, enabling the vehicle to operate on each fuel source independently, though not simultaneously. Moreover, at particular intervals, the car can easily **convert between compressed or liquefied natural gas and standard gasoline or diesel fuel**. This design allows for greater fuel flexibility and economy.

### **How do Bi-fuel Natural Gas Vehicles Work?**

Bi-fuel Natural Gas Vehicles feature a complex system comprised of various components, enabling flexible switching between gasoline and natural gas. The operational mechanism is as follows:

1\. A bi-fuel natural gas vehicle **employs both gasoline and natural gas** in its internal combustion engine. It features separate components, such as tanks, injection systems, and fuel lines for each fuel, enabling the driver to switch between them.

2\. The fuel-related elements, including fillers, injection systems, lines, and tanks, are distinct for both gasoline and natural gas. The electronic control module (ECM) is a critical component overseeing various functions.

3\. In the gasoline configuration, it regulates the gasoline mixture, ignition timing, emissions system, and overall vehicle operation.

4\. In the [natural gas setup](https://afdc.energy.gov/vehicles/how-do-natural-gas-cars-work), the **natural gas ECM collaborates with the gasoline ECM** to manage the natural gas mixture, ignition timing and emissions system, and perform similar monitoring activities.

5\. The exhaust system directs engine exhaust gases through a tailpipe and incorporates a three-way catalyst to reduce emissions.

6\. A fuel selector switch on the dashboard **facilitates easy switching** between fuel types, while the high-pressure regulator controls fuel pressure for the engine’s fuel injection system.

7\. Distinct elements make up the gasoline and natural gas systems, including fillers, injection systems, lines, and tanks. The fuel pump ensures efficient distribution of gasoline to the engine’s injection system.

8\. The spark-ignited internal combustion engine receives fuel either in the intake manifold or combustion chamber. Moreover, a manual shut-off allows for the manual interruption of the gasoline supply. The vehicle includes a natural gas fuel filter and pressure sensors to prevent system blockages and ensure an effective fuel supply.

9\. The battery powers engine start-up and vehicle electronics, while the transmission transfers mechanical power to the wheels.

Overall, this comprehensive design enhances fuel efficiency, emissions control, and operational flexibility in a bi-fuel natural gas vehicle.

### **What are the Advantages of Bi-Fuel Engines?**

Bi-fuel engines with the flexibility of two distinct fuel sources offer several advantages which are as follows:

**1\. Efficiency**: A bi-fuel system maximizes efficiency by utilizing the most efficient fuel for each task. As a result, these systems have much higher long-term efficiency than single-fuel engines like those seen in gas-powered vehicles. This economy is further boosted by streamlined fuel storage, which either increases the time between diesel fill-ups or minimizes the size of storage tanks needed.

**2\. Sustainability**: By reducing diesel fuel use, a bi-fuel generator or engine can significantly reduce particulate matter, CO2, and other emissions into the atmosphere. Furthermore, these systems can help with flare gas recapture, reusing byproducts that would otherwise go to waste.

**3\. Significant cost savings**: A bi-fuel system can save up to 50% on fuel prices compared to a single-fuel system.

**4\. Longer runtime**: During power outages, operators can reduce reliance on diesel fuel, allowing essential applications to continue operations.
