# How to Turn Off Solar Panels

A rapid shutdown system is a safety turnoff for your solar panel system.

Have you ever wondered how and why solar panels need to be powered off? What are the situations when we switch down them? Yes, we restart the panels in certain situations like any other electronic device. Today in this blog we learn about what are the steps to carefully turn off solar panels manually.

## **How to Turn Off Solar Panels**

PV panels can be disconnected at the AC side of the switchboard. They are turned off when maintenance is needed or in case of a storm.

To switch off  the solar panel you need to follow the below steps:

**Step 1:** Switch off all the electronics and appliances within the solar system, like lights and TV 

**Step 2:** You find out and identify the AC and DC sides 

**Step 3:** You need to locate the AC side and switch off the main supply on the AC side

**Step 4:** Now shut down the AC circuit breaker

**Step 5:** Now proceed to do the same with the DC side

**Step 6:** Wait for 10-15 minutes to ensure the power is down making sure that to prevent damage

**Note:** While following these steps, make sure to take steps to prevent electric shock.

### **Can Solar Panels be Turned Off?**

**Yes**, they can be turned off. Resetting any device would be an important step for its performance.  In the case of the solar system’s safety and protection, it is to shut down.

Given below are the cases to see why it is switched off:

**1. Maintenance:** While cleaning and inspecting, there is a chance of electric shock by current flow.

**2. Emergency:** When there is a sudden weather change, lighting, or storm it is necessary to turn off the panel to prevent damage.

### **Do I Need to Turn Off Solar Panels to Clean?**

**Yes**, but switching off panels will stop the production of electricity at any time. After the cleaning service, they should be turned on. In winter make sure you switch them off during the day itself so you don’t lose energy.

### **Is There an Emergency Shut-Off in the Solar Panel?**

**Yes,** the American Safety Association’s National Electrical Code (NEC) came up with this rule of [rapid shutdown](https://iaeimagazine.org/electrical-fundamentals/nec-rapid-shutdown-requirements-and-ul-3741/) requirement. As per this rule, the solar system must decrease the current and voltage to a safe measure within 10 seconds of shutoff. 

Rapid Shutdown is a safety equipment for shutting off. Once the emergency button is pressed voltage turns to zero. It **avoids current sparks and electric leakages** in case of extreme situations. You can easily go back and press the same button to restart.
