# What is a Central Inverter?

A central inverter usually refers to a huge (MW scale) inverter that **will be used in a very large commercial or utility-scale installation** to connect thousands of solar panels. Typically, they are large boxes around the size of a small shed. The single inverter in a residential installation is sometimes referred to as the central inverter, although the correct term is a string inverter. It is a particular kind of inverter used in solar modules to transform DC power from solar panels into AC power.

### **What are Solar Inverters?**

Any **solar system must have inverters** as essential pieces of hardware. Inverters come in several forms, such as central inverters, [microinverters](https://news.energysage.com/microinverters-overview/), and power optimizers. Solar electricity generated by solar panels is transformed into (AC) power by solar inverters so that it can be used by home appliances directly or linked to the grid. Direct current is the first type of electricity that solar panels generate (DC). Raw DC power is converted by inverters into usable AC power for equipment. Additionally, it oversees and manages the operation of the PV system.

### **What are the Types of Inverters?**

**Central inverters and micro-inverters** are the two primary categories of inverters. A string of PV panels is connected by central inverters, which also change [DC current](https://energytheory.com/what-is-direct-current-dc/) into AC. The greatest number of solar panels on a single string—the word for solar panels connected in series—is often ten. Parallel string combining produces an output that is fed into the inverter.

### **What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Central Inverters?**

The **advantages** of central inverters are:

- Credibility resulting from long-term use and presence in the market.
- lower prices
- ability to generate far more power
- Reliability: Because central inverters are installed in secure areas

The **disadvantages** of central inverters are:

- If A single point of failure might occur then the operation of the entire system will be impacted even if a single panel is shaded or fails for some other reason.
- Higher risk factor since the high-rated DC voltage produced could endanger both the operator’s and owners’ lives.
- higher cost of replacement
