The **air temperature of any object or setting** where equipment is kept is known as the ambient temperature. Relating to the immediate surroundings is the definition of the term ambient. The normal temperature or baseline temperature are other names for this value. System design and thermal analysis depend on it.

### **Why is Ambient Temperature Crucial?**

The majority of electrical and electronic equipment is susceptible to the effects of hot and cold conditions, which can diminish output and efficiency, shorten equipment life, and have other long- and short-term effects. In order for equipment **to operate properly and for personal comfort**, the ambient temperature is crucial. The temperatures may need to be adjusted to keep them at the right levels for both comfort and proper machine operation. Cooling systems are used to lower the temperatures, while heaters are used to raise them.

The designers can restrict the power dissipation of the components to prevent components from reaching high temperatures even though the ambient temperature is more dependent on nature and hence harder to manage. This is accomplished via derating, or restricting the current in applications with high surrounding temperatures, and is accomplished with the use of derating curves.

### **What Affects the Ambient Temperature?**

Ambient temperature refers to the temperature of the room or the air around the equipment being considered, like a computer or power supply unit. This temperature and the amount of power used by the electronic equipment in the environment **affect the final temperature.** To protect components and stop malfunctions, the resulting temperature needs to be kept at a safe level.

Weather, humidity, insulation, furnishings, equipment, occupants, cooling and heating systems, and other elements all **affect the ambient temperature in a space.** The heat produced and dispersed by electronic equipment, such as computers, servers, and printers, will make a room warmer. Warmer temperatures will also result from the body heat of people, animals, and other mammals.

### **How to Measure Ambient Temperature?**

You can use a [temperature sensor](https://www.fierceelectronics.com/sensors/what-a-temperature-sensor) or a **thermometer** to measure a component or room’s ambient temperature. For accurate readings, it is advisable to keep the measuring device in the shade, in a well-ventilated space, and at the midheight of the room.

When measuring this temperature indoors, it’s quite important to monitor the temperature values over the length of a day. It allows you to pinpoint the maximum and minimum temperatures. To help determine this temperature for the outdoor environment, historical temperature averages are used.
