# What are Greenhouse Gases?

Greenhouse gases are **gases that trap heat in the Earth’s atmosphere,** leading to the greenhouse effect. They can be either natural or human-generated and include carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CHâ‚„), nitrous oxide (Nâ‚‚O), fluorinated gases, and water vapor. These gases contribute to global warming by absorbing and re-emitting infrared radiation. Greenhouse gases have always been surrounded by various controversies. Different acts and worldwide meetings of leaders have been held over the recent few decades to control the emission of these harmful gasses for that matter.

### **How are Greenhouse Gases Emitted?**

CO2 is released from [burning fossil fuels](https://terrapass.com/blog/consequences-of-burning-fossil-fuels/) like coal, oil, and natural gas, as well as deforestation and land-use changes. CHâ‚„ is emitted during agricultural activities, livestock production, waste decomposition, and natural processes like wetlands. Nâ‚‚O is released from **agricultural and industrial activities**, as well as soil and water processes. Fluorinated gases, such as HFCs, PFCs, and SF6, are synthetic gases used in various industries. Water vapor, although abundant, is primarily influenced by temperature and not directly impacted by human activities.

The increased concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, largely from **human activities**, has intensified the greenhouse effect and **resulted in global warming** and climate change. It has detrimental effects on the environment, ecosystems, and human societies. It is essential to address the sources and impacts of greenhouse gases to mitigate climate change and promote sustainable environmental practices.

To effectively address the issue of greenhouse gas emissions, it is **important to reduce reliance on fossil fuels,** promote energy efficiency, implement waste reduction and recycling measures, conserve water, support afforestation and reforestation efforts, and raise awareness and advocate for sustainability. Taking proactive measures can play a significant role in mitigating climate change and protecting our planet for future generations.
