To enhance PV panel’s efficiency and make them last longer, researchers are experimenting with different approaches. Recently, Fraunhofer ISE brings 31.6% efficient solar cell developed with a new approach.

Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) announced that their developed PV silicon tandem solar cell has achieved 31.6% power conversion efficiency. By using a hybrid manufacturing process, they applied perovskite solar material on the top of a silicon heterojunction cell. Moreover, they used a standard silicon solar cell for the bottom subcell.

CalLab, the calibration laboratory by Fraunhofer ISE confirmed the result. Further, the researchers explain that the cell with a top perovskite photovoltaic device is made from the heterojunction technology. It features micrometer-sized pyramids and with bottom cell.

The research institute mention that “The new 1 cm² solar cell is special in that the perovskite layer of the top cell is an industrially textured silicon heterojunction solar cell using a hybrid manufacturing route. The successful use of textured standard silicon solar cells and the uniform application of the perovskite layer on the texturized surface are important prerequisites for the industrial production of perovskite silicon tandem solar cells.”

A few months back, KAUST reveals 33.7% efficient and stable perovskite silicon tandem solar cells.

Juliane Borchert is the the group leader of perovskite materials and interfaces at the institute. She explained that the process combines vapor deposition and wet chemical deposition. It ensures an even deposition of the PV layer on the textured silicon surface.

However, no further technical details were provided about the solar cell. The scientists stated, “The tandem solar cell manufactured at Fraunhofer ISE incorporates results from the research projects PrEsto and MaNiTU as well as the support from an intensive exchange with scientists from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).”
