# Austrian Start-up Brings New Process for Recycling EV Batteries: Cost-Effective and Eco-Friendly

Effectively using heat from other devices, recycling batteries onsite is a better approach.

Lithium-ion batteries demand is on the rise due to their various applications in electric vehicles and devices. High demand and supply obviously lead to high waste generation. To control this, researchers from Austria are recycling EV batteries with a new process without using heat.

Researchers from the [University of Graz](https://www.uni-graz.at/en/), Austria have developed a compact lithium-ion battery recycling system. The system **focuses on recycling batteries used in EVs** in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly manner. Researchers have formed a spin-off company and are developing their patented compact battery recycling process.

According to researchers, the device is of the **size of an ordinary container** which allows battery recycling onsite. It can separate cobalt, nickel, and lithium from liquid electrolytes. Moreover, this is done without heat, thus making the process safer and more affordable.

ProjectLiB described that the process safely shreds the batteries through a mechanical separation phase. This is then followed by a chemical post-treatment phase in which wastewater and acids are used to wash out individual components. Energy surplus from other processes is used in this process further making it safe.

The first prototype of this recycling technology is located on the university campus. As per the researchers, presently battery prototypes for transport are under development. However, very soon, the technology will be recycling them directly onsite. Moreover, the present prototype is EV battery recycling focussed but the team aims to expand this process to recycle batteries from phones and laptops.
