Electrical connections between panels in an array can be made in series, parallel, or a combination of the three, but typically a series connection is selected to improve output voltage. For instance, when two solar panels are connected in series, the voltage of each panel doubles while the current does not.

A photovoltaic array can be as small as a few individual PV modules or panels attached to each other and mounted on a rooftop in an urban setting, or it can be as large as hundreds of PV panels connected to each other in a field to power an entire town or neighborhood.
