A solar thermal collector without a glazed covering that has an absorber, is known as an unglazed solar collector. The flat-plate collector doesn’t have a glass covering for the absorber. These collectors work best for low-temperature applications that require a temperature below 30° C because they are not insulated.

Solar swimming pool heater systems typically utilize unglazed collectors as they are able to circulate substantial amounts of water through the collector, thus allowing for the capture of an impressive 80 percent of the available solar energy.

This is primarily used for seasonal indoor swimming pools, pre-heating water for car washes, and heating water used in fish farming operations. Unglazed solar collectors have a potential market for water heating collectors at remote locations like summer camps.

Unglazed collectors typically consist of black plastic that is specially treated to endure ultraviolet light. Because these collectors do not have any glazing, they are able to absorb a greater amount of the Sun’s energy.

However, due to the lack of insulation, a significant amount of the absorbed heat is lost, especially during windy and cold weather conditions. Their ability to transfer heat to and from the air is incredibly efficient, allowing them to capture heat during hot and windy nights.
