# What are Double Glass Solar Panels?

![What are Double Glass Solar Panels](https://energytheory.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/What-are-Double-Glass-Solar-Panels-1024x683.jpg "What are Double Glass Solar Panels?")

While it is not as robust as diamond or translucent aluminum, it is significantly less expensive. Glass is such a good material for the front of solar panels, especially the double glass solar panels, someone clever thought it would be even better to have glass on the back. Glass backing outperforms the plastic back sheet used in ordinary solar panels, although it is heavier and more expensive. Let’s see another double glass solar panel advantage below in the article.

## **What are Double Glass Solar Panels?**

![What are Double Glass Solar Panels](https://energytheory.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/What-are-Double-Glass-Solar-Panels1.jpg)

There has recently been a worldwide trend to** put glass on both sides of the panel** and the name given is known as double glass solar panels. These are known as Double-Glass designs (solar panels with double glass or glass solar panels).

The double glass module, as the name implies, is a construction in which the typical aluminum frames and back sheet substrate are replaced by another glass panel. As a result, the solar cells are entirely surrounded by glass. The cells are located on the connection’s neutral axis and do not incur mechanical stress when the module is bent due to snow loads, hail, etc. Also, the double glass module is less susceptible to moisture or chemical penetration than standard modules.

The photocell in a typical solar panel is encased in a casing, with the glass at the front and the back covered by an opaque wall composed of metal or metal plastic. Yet, such a solar panel design is especially vulnerable if it is exposed to moisture, temperature changes, and mechanical stress over an extended period of time. Dirt and humidity infiltrate panels with such a back wall more easily, causing their power output to drop year after year. As a result, most manufacturers guarantee that their solar panels’ efficiency will remain above 90% for the first ten years and will remain above 80% after 20-25 years.

### **What is the Distinction Between Single and Double Glass Solar Panels?**

There is a clear distinction between single and double glass solar panels. This difference should be clear by this-

#### **Single Glass Solar Panels**

In such panels, tempered glass is the **first layer of materials** in the solar module structure. It can effectively protect the panel and solar cells from physical stress, snow, wind, dust, and moisture, among other things while allowing sunlight to pass through.

In most cases, the back side is shielded by an opaque sheet known as the back sheet. An aluminum framing system holds the entire structure in place, providing strength against accidents and maltreatment during installation.

#### **Double Glass Solar Panels**

Double-glass solar modules are made up of **two layers of tempered glass** that cover both sides of the solar panel. As snow accumulates on a typical solar panel or people stomp on it (during installation), the solar cells bend dramatically, resulting in microcracks on the cells.

Whereas double-glass solar modules will experience substantially less deformation due to the greater strength provided by two layers of glass, the probability of microcracks forming on the solar cells will be significantly reduced.

### **What are Double Glass Mono PERC Solar Panels?**

The front surface of double glass mono solar cells has **an emitter layer** and the back side has a dark covering. Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell (PERC) uses a [dielectric](https://www.techtarget.com/whatis/definition/dielectric-material) passivation coating on the cell’s rear surface. Consequently, the front surface of PERC cells collects sunlight, whereas the back surface absorbs scattered or reflected light. Because of their increased light absorption and internal reflection, they generate more energy than their traditional equivalents. These two factors provide numerous advantages to end users, particularly residential consumers.

### **What are Double Glass Solar Panel Advantages?**

Typically, solar panels have a front glass panel and a back plastic sheet. These single-sided glass panels are supported by frames across the entire construction. Manufacturers have developed double glass solar panels in recent years. Instead of a plastic back sheet, these panels have a second layer of glass on the back. The double glass solar panel has the following advantage/advantages.

#### **1.** **Glass Performs Consistently and Essentially Doesn’t Age**

It is the greatest option for **areas with high humidity** levels because it is entirely impermeable and thus moisture resistant. Because such panels are impermeable to moisture and oxygen, the aging process of the modules essentially never happens.

**Also Read:** [Monocrystalline Solar Panel Vs Polycrystalline](https://energytheory.com/monocrystalline-solar-panel-vs-polycrystalline/)

#### **2. Increased Dependability and Toughness**

The double glass panel without a rear protective layer effectively dissipates heat, and it loses around **30% less efficiency** over time than conventional panels. As they produce 25% more energy, Double-Glass modules often have a 30-year guarantee including the panels themselves.

#### **3. Produces More Electricity for a Longer Period of Time**

Because of its guaranteed excellent performance and longer life, the glass solar panel produces more electricity for a longer period of time.

#### **4. Increased Power**

Modules made of double glass are more resilient to **mechanical and physical stress.** As a result, ordinary-type solar panels bend when exposed to wind, snow, hail, or other elements. [Microcracks](https://energytheory.com/why-do-solar-panels-degrade/) develop as a result, decreasing the panel’s effectiveness. With double-glass modules, the glass sheets at the front and back have the same thickness, and the neutral layer, which is in the middle, is not under any compressive or tensile stress. As a result, integrated solar cells have the best possible mechanical protection.

#### **5. Chemical Reaction Resistance**

There are a few **chemicals and environmental factors** that cause the glass to react. Wine is poured into glass bottles because it can be preserved for hundreds of years. No chemical reactions will take place between the glass sheet and the solar cells or the epoxy resin holding the panels together as a result of this material’s characteristics.

#### **6. Reduced Stress and Distortion**

In the double glass, the front and back sheets of glass** expand and contract** at the same pace because they have the same thermal expansion. As a result, in hot or cold settings, solar cells in Double-Glass panels are subject to reduced stress and distortion.

#### **7. Virtually Complete Absence of Potential Induced Degradation**

Another benefit of double-glass solar panels over traditional batteries is this. [ PID can result in a 30% reduction](https://energytheory.com/what-is-potential-induced-degradation/) in performance for typical solar panels. Parasitic currents in the modules, particularly those that are at ground potential, are to blame. The entry of moisture and temperature improves the effect. Double glass solar panels are essentially impervious to such deterioration since they can isolate moisture from both sides.

#### **8.** **Double Glazing**

Has a better fire rating than traditional panels, thus alterations in the case of a fire will be less noticeable, especially if the panels are mounted on the roof.

#### **9. Reduced Possibility of Photocell Microcracks**

The photocell is better shielded from mechanical harm during **installation and transportation** by the double-layer glass. As a result, utilizing Double-Glass considerably reduces the possibility of photocell microcracks by the time the solar plant is operating.

**Also See:** [What are 4 Types of Solar Panel?](https://energytheory.com/what-are-the-types-of-solar-panel/)

#### **10. Lower Overall Cost**

In systems with double-glass panels, the voltage can reach 1500 V(in traditional modules up to 1000 V). When choosing a greater working voltage for the solar panels, helps to lower the** overall cost** of the solar power plant (due to the cost of wires, grid inverter, etc.).

Double glass panels are now widely employed in agriculture, manufacturing, and domestic settings all over the world. Double-Glass modules are the ideal answer to fulfill the rising demands of the rapidly expanding solar energy sector and support its future expansion.
