As we all know, air quality is low and harmful but, in some regions, it becomes too unhealthy, especially during winter months. Delhi is one such state where from October to February, air quality reaches hazardous levels. In November 2023, Delhi’s average PM2.5 reading was around 220.7 µg/m, which in general is very unhealthy. This year, Delhi to control air pollution with 14-point action plan.

With winter around the corner, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai announced the formulation of a joint winter action plan for combating rising air pollution in the capital. According to Minister Rai, a meeting is scheduled for 5 September where consultations will be done with all 33 relevant departments to prepare the winter action plan. The decision regarding this was taken earlier at a high-level meeting.

Highlights: Delhi to Control Air Pollution With 14-Point Action Plan

  • The action plan will center on 14 critical focus areas.
  • It will be addressing key issues including dust pollution, garbage disposal, industrial emission, stubble burning, and vehicular emissions.
  • The focus will also be on increasing green spaces, encouraging tree plantations, and developing e-waste eco parks.
  • To enhance public participation and awareness.
  • The winter action plan will incorporate a multi-faceted approach and upgrade technology for better monitoring.
  • It will also include communication via Green Delhi application and Green War Room.
  • Firecracker usage will also be managed in hotspot areas where it significantly influences air quality during the festival season.
  • To identify and address pollution hotspots and conduct real-time source apportionment studies.

According to the Minister Rai, collaborative efforts will include senior officials from various agencies:

  • Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD)
  • New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC)
  • Cantonment Board
  • Delhi Development Authority (DDA)
  • Central Public Works Department (CPWD)
  • Public Works Department (PWD)
  • Traffic Police
  • Transport Department, Environment Department, and Development Department
  • Delhi Pollution Control Board Commission (DPCC)
