The Energy Statistics India 2024 report shows that India is moving closer to its goal of having net-zero emissions by 2070. The report shows that India’s energy consumption per person has gone up, which means that more people in the country can now access electricity. But the nonrenewable sector is still in charge. In India, the energy sector is the biggest user of raw coal and lignite.
Even so, there has been a clear shift in the demand for energy from non-renewable to renewable sources. Its share of Total Primary Energy Supply (TPES) rose to 3.81% in 2021–22, and its share of Total Electricity reached 20.34% in the same year. India needs to focus on building and improving power evacuation infrastructure, putting in place Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and Ancillary Services, and combining electric vehicles (EVs) with clean energy sources in order to reach its goal of net zero emissions by 2070.
