ZF converts Belgium plant into powertrain production facility aiming to contribute to the EU’s renewable energy target of 42.5% by 2030.
Belgium-based ZF Wind Power converts its Belgium plant into a powertrain production facility for the European wind market. A mix of shift gearboxes, as well as offshore and onshore powertrains will leave the Lommel plant every day in the first quarter of 2024.
The company earlier used to focus on producing gearboxes only but has now expanded to making complete powertrain systems. By adding an offshore production line, it can also serve the whole European offshore wind market.

Felix Henseler, the CEO of ZF Wind Power, expressed, “Thanks to the close cooperation with our partners, we can now manufacture innovative powertrain models for offshore turbines that can produce up to 80 gigawatt hours/year.“
ZF converts Belgium plant into powertrain production facility and for onshore powertrains, they now offer 4 different variants for turbine platforms with a maximum power output of 7.2 megawatts.
Henseler further added, “At ZF, we are prepared for the future with various optimizations and investments to produce gearboxes and powertrains to meet European demand, both onshore and offshore. The EU’s renewable energy target of 42.5% by 2030 is ambitious but not impossible to achieve. We have to start now and all together.”
