A substantial amount of Solar energy is needed for global energy transition. A workforce that is skilled and trained as per a trusted certified system is required. Global Solar Council brings solar technicians training standards jointly with Global Wind Organisation for PV technician’s workforce around the world.

The Global Solar Council (GSC) and Global Wind Organisation (GWO) are collaborating to develop standardized, basic training for PV technicians. With these standards there will be development in sector-wide standards. This will further ensure quality, growth and safety in the PV workforce.

Initially, standardized training modules will be developed, including clear learning objectives. These modules will cover the latest work processes along with risks and hazards that utility-scale solar technicians may come across.

Guidelines for Entry Level Solar Technician Training by the American Clean Power Association contains job role definitions and guidelines. According to the GSC, training standards will closely align with them.

Benefits of Solar Technicians Training Standards

As per the assessments conducted by both organizations, training standards will be helpful in avoiding mass duplication in the sector. It would also lead to better productivity and lower transaction costs.

Asset owners and developers will endorse this training for their engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractors.

CEO of Global Solar Council, Sonia Dunlop said, “With the solar power sector expected to add up to 1 TW of new capacity annually from 2030 onwards, the industry will need to massively scale up our skilled workforce.”

Dunlop further added, “Having a global standard is essential due to the global nature of the solar sector, so that workers possess universally recognized and transferable skills, reducing the transaction cost of deploying solar. This not only creates more opportunities for the solar workforce but will be invaluable to ensure the quality of solar installations for a sustainable and just energy transition.”
