A new design philosophy has been found that gives hope to organic photovoltaic cells to be used more rationally. Scientists at Abdullah Gül University in Türkiye told that hemispherical shells can improve absorption in organic solar cells.
Researchers at Abdullah Gül University in Türkiye have developed hemispherical solar cells that will boost both light capture and angular coverage. The novelty of this design can dramatically change the case of organic solar cells and their efficiency.
The research’s lead Professor Dooyoung Hah emphasized the benefits of the new design strategy in his findings. They took the help of other finite element analysis (FEA) throughout three equally tall hemispherical-shell-shaped active layers to find out the absorber spectra in any given direction. FEA simulates/analyses the work of complicated structures with different conditions.
Advantages of the Harnessing Light with New Hemispherical Shells
- The results showed remarkable improvements in light absorption compared to flat-structured devices.
- There is an enhancement of about 66% for transverse electric TE-polarized light and 36% times for transverse magnetic TM-polarized light.
- The hemispherical shells demonstrated higher absorption – 13% for TE polarization and 21% for TM polarization.
- The dome shell became the optimal shape for this special purpose, in comparison to previously reported semicylindrical shell designs.
- They give angular expanded coverage rated up to 81° for TE polarization and 82° for TM polarization.
- The hemispherical shell structure gives excellent polarimetric performance.

Application in New Areas
As they are highly adaptable, their common applications can be in small electronic wearables.
“With the improved absorption and omnidirectionality characteristics, the proposed hemispherical-shell-shaped active layers will be found beneficial in various application areas of organic solar cells, such as biomedical devices, as well as applications such as power-generation windows and greenhouses, internet-of-things, and so on.”, says Professor Hah.
Hemispherical Shells can improve absorption in organic solar cells and brings a significant innovation to its pattern. By combining finite element analysis with advanced structural engineering it is possible to extend the lifespan of renewable energy devices.
