To explore the development of solar power plants in the Republic of C×´te d’Ivoire an agreement has been signed between Masdar and the Ministry of Petroleum, and Energy of C×´te d’Ivoire. With this Masdar will develop a 70 MW solar power plant in C×´te d’Ivoire

Signatories Mamadou Sangafowa Coulibaly (the Ivorian Minister of Mining, Petroleum and Energy) and Fawaz Al Muharrami (Executive Director of Clean Energy, Masdar) signed the agreement for this project in the presence of Tiשmoko Meyliet Konש (Vice President of the Republic of C×´te d’Ivoire), along with Shakhboot Nahyan Al Nahyan (UAE Cabinet Member and Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation), and Dr Sultan Al Jaber (UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology).

Etihad 7 initiative is a UAE-led program under which this agreement has been signed. The initiative aims at raising funds from the public and private sectors for investing in the development of the renewable energy sector in Africa. The initiative has a goal to achieve 20 GW power capacity to be supplied to 100 million people across the continent by 2030.

According to the agreement, this joint development of solar PV plants in C×´te d’Ivoire will be explored by the Ivorian Ministry of Mining, Petroleum and Energy along with Masdar. The first plant capacity will be 50-70 MW, and it will support the country’s goal to achieve 42% of its energy supply from renewable resources by 2030.

Mamadou Sangafowa Coulibaly said, “C×´te d’Ivoire has committed under climate change agreements to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 32% and to increase the share of renewable energies in its energy mix to 45% by 2030. In accordance with its commitments, C×´te d’Ivoire has drawn up a master plan for the development of its production facilities, which integrates solar, hydroelectricity, and biomass.”

Coulibaly further added, “The framework agreement that we have just signed with Masdar, accompanied by a first project of 50 to 70 MW, will contribute, in addition to the other initiatives that the Ivorian government is undertaking, to achieving this ambitious objective.”

To this Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar added, “As part of Masdar’s new shareholding structure launched in December, we have a goal of delivering 100 GW of clean energy around the world by 2030. With Africa’s massive projected development and growth and low current clean energy penetration levels, we see enormous potential for the renewable energy sector across the continent. This agreement will support C×´te d’Ivoire’s clean energy goals and help to drive sustainable economic development for the nation.”

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), as of now less than half of Sub-Saharan Africa has access to electricity and about 20% of electricity in Africa is sourced from renewable resources. Approx. 850 TW wind and solar is the theoretical potential capacity of the country.

With analytical support from McKinsey & Company, it is under process by Masdar and Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week. Including C×´te d’Ivoire, 3 more agreements were signed at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2023.

With this Etihad 7 initiative has 5 projects under its umbrella. Other agreements included were with: Ministry of Energy, and Zambian national utility ZESCO Limited, Zambia for the joint development of wind, hydroelectricity, and solar project of total installed capacity of 2 GW.

Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, Uganda on the development of Greenfield renewable projects with a total installed capacity of 1 GW. Ministry of Energy and Water, Angola for development of renewable energy projects with total installed capacity 2 GW

An agreement between Masdar and TANESCO (Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited) has been signed last year for developing energy projects with a total capacity of about 2 GW which is also under the Etihad 7 initiative. Establishment of the joint venture between both parties is in its final stage to advance this collaboration.

Apart from this, with the formation of Infinity Power Holding joint venture in collaboration with Egypt, the leading clean energy company Masdar, already has a considerable presence in Africa. The company along with Hassan Allam Utilities and Infinity Power has signed an agreement with the government of Egypt to develop a 10 GW onshore wind project.

This is one of the largest wind farms in the world. Also, the trio is working for the development of green hydrogen projects in Egypt with a target of 4 GW capacity by 2030 and an output of about 480,000 tones of green hydrogen per year. With a new initiative, Masdar will develop a 70 MW solar power plant in C×´te d’Ivoire taking a step towards a carbon-neutral future.
