A low voltage disconnect (LVD) is a protective device that disconnects an electrical load from its power source when the voltage falls below a predetermined level. Its primary purpose is to prevent damage to batteries and other electrical equipment caused by over-discharge.

LVDs work by monitoring the voltage of the battery or power source. When the voltage drops below a set level, the electronic circuit disconnects the load from the power source. The low voltage disconnect is usually installed between the battery and the load and can either be a standalone device or integrated into the battery management system.

The low voltage disconnect circuit includes a voltage comparator, a reference voltage, and a switching element. The voltage comparator compares the battery voltage with the reference voltage. If the battery voltage falls below the reference voltage, the switching element disconnects the load from the battery. The reference voltage is set slightly above the minimum safe voltage for the battery to prevent over-discharge.

  • Telecom and data centers rely on LVDs to protect the batteries that provide backup power during power outages.
  • Finally, LVDs are used in emergency lighting systems to prevent over-discharge of batteries during extended power outages.
