To enhance their sustainability efforts, Mercedes-Benz plans to host 11 MWH organic flow battery. This lignin-based battery will store solar energy produced by rooftop PV systems.

A Mercedez-Benz Germany factory is set to install an organic flow battery for storing solar energy generated by rooftop systems. The Organic SolidFlow technology for this project is sourced from Germany-based CMBlu.

The automaker will use the 11 MWh storage system for its Rastatt factory and will be implemented in the 2nd half of 2025. The battery will store solar power temporarily and does not require critical raw materials. Moreover, according to the manufacturer, it is completely recyclable.

Lignin, a material from pulp mills, is used as a material, which is a high-performance organic energy storage molecule. It is non-explosive, non-flammable and lasts for more than 10,000 charging cycles.

The organic flow battery in Mercedes-Benz factory offers a multi-cell stack design and thus is suitable for stationary storage applications only. However, it has the scalability to reach the gigawatt level.

Jörg Burzer, Board Member at Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Production, Quality and Supply Chain Management said, “We are contributing to the renewable energy future on our end: we want to play an active role in shaping the energy transition. It’s critically important for our team to integrate energy storage systems into our production centers which are increasingly powered by renewable energy. With the help of Organic SolidFlow technology from CMBlu Energy, we can pursue an innovative approach to this challenge and are looking forward to introducing this battery at our Rastatt plant soon.”
