Transitioning to Net Zero is a bigger task than it seems. Different industries from various sectors need to come together with better plans to achieve the targets. In one such initiative, it was announced that sugar mills to help India generate green fuel and achieve targets set under CORSIA by 2027.

The Indian Sugar & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) plans to transform sugar mills into bio-refineries to boost production of sustainable aviation fuel and other green energy resources. ISMA in a meeting with Food Minister Pralhad Joshi discussed the policy framework for the transition.

Director general of ISMA, Deepak Ballani mentioned that the initiative would help India meet the international aviation blending targets. These targets are set to take under CORSIA in 2027.

Director Ballani said, “We see a future where local resources drive national development. This aligns with the government’s vision for a self-reliant India.”

India has estimated 55 million sugarcane farmers and the plan also includes adding an alternative market for them. With the success of the current ethanol blending program, the initiative seeks to increase incomes of farmers too.
